Why do I love America?

Why do I love the United States of America?

Although there has been anti-America sentiment for the last few years in Korea,

I decided to be a citizen of America.

Sometimes I even wonder myself how I could take such a big step

and, I thought it best to articulate why I love America and wanted be an American.

I became a citizen of America in my mid forties.

It is natural that I am a Korean American; it is never strange

or unusual to say that in this country.

It is the unique feature of America, a land of immigrants.

I do not have to explain about the immigration history of the USA

because everyone knows that history.

Whatever reason you have to be in this country,

“Once you are here in the states, you have a right to be an owner of the country.”

Nobody can claim that this country only belongs to a certain group.

Rookie immigrants can make their own dreams,

with the prerequisite capability of speaking English.

Surprisingly, people can survive without English language ability.

Of course, there are quantity differences in the labor force

and a quality variation in the standard of living.

Let me paint the picture of the structure in my branch at Citibank

as an example of the greatness of American work environment.

In our financial center, we have only one US born citizen.

Three, Caroline, Akua, Galle speak French as native tongue,

and they are from Africa.

Urvashi is from India,

Art is from a nation of South America, but looks like a Caucasian.

Shlomo is from Israel,

Maria is from Mexico (she also looks like a Caucasian,

but has a strong Spanish accent.)

Lance is from Africa, but his native language is not French.

Norma is the only US born person, and I am from Korea.

This simple example shows the complexion of America.

One more sample is the case of the newly appointed CEO of Citibank,

which is the largest bank in the world.

Our new CEO is Mr. Pandit, who is from India and moved to US

when he was 16 years old.

After acquiring his Ph D, he had careers in the university and investment

banking communities before he moved to Citibank a few years ago.

Finally, he has become the CEO of Citibank.

There are many clichés about hard work,

and applying yourself to become a success. 

I have met many immigrants that may not understand the word cliché

but they have a strong understanding of the hard work concept. 

Their work ethic has made them successes. 

Not many will be CEOs,

but many will climb to higher levels than imagined.

These are the reason that I love America.

You can dream and turn your dream into reality by hard work and effort

regardless of age, gender, race or educational level.

PS: I often wonder if native-born Americans realize the opportunities they have, and the greatness and hard work of their ancestral immigrants. We, new immigrants, have an excellent appreciation of the toil of past immigrants.

나는 왜 미국을 사랑하는가?

지난 몇년동안 한국에서 일었던 반미 풍토에도 불구하고,

난 왜 미국을 사랑하는지,

그리고, 왜 미국인이 되기로 결정했는지,

가끔은 나도 의아해 하곤 한다.

40대 중반에 미국인이 된 나.

그러나 지금도 ‘한국인’이라고 말하는 나.

그리고 그 모든것이 어색하지 않은 나.

그것이 바로 미국이란 나라의 특수성이다.

굳이 미국의 역사를 이야기 하지 않아도

여러번의 우여곡절 끝에

‘일단 미국으로 들어오면,

이나라는 그들의 나라가 된다.’

이곳은 특별한 주인이 있는것이 아니라,

새로운 맴버도 바로 이 땅의 주인 행세를 할 수 있다.

단, 영어만 된다면.

그러나 그것도 잠시,

놀랍게도 영어를 못해도

먹고 사는것을 해결할 수 있다.

노동력의 질적 양적 차이와

생활의 질적인 차이는 있지만.

그 예로 내가 일하고 있는 시티뱅크의 구성원을 보자.

우리 지점에 미국에서 태어난 이는 오직 한사람.

불어가 모국어인 아프리카 출신인 캐롤라인, 아쿠아, 게일,

인도에서온 우바시,

보기엔 백인인데 남미에서 태어난 아트,

이스라엘에서 온 실로모,

멕시코에서 온 마리아 (그녀도 보기엔 백인같음, 그러나 강한 스페니쉬 액센트),

같은 아프리카 출신이지만 불어를 못하는 랜스,

유일한 미국태생 (흑인) 인 노마,

인도네시아 출신인 토미,

그리고, 한국에서 온 나.

이것이 바로 미국이다.

또 하나, 세계 1위의 은행인 시티뱅크의

새 CEO는 인도계의 ‘밴디트’가 임명 되었다.

그는 16살에 미국으로 이민,

MIT를 거쳐 박사학위를 받고,

대학, 인베스먼트 뱅크등에서 근무하다,

시티뱅크로 전직한후

마침내 시티뱅크의CEO가 된것이다.

이게 바로 내가 미국을 사랑하는 이유이다.

연령, 성별, 인종, 학벌에 관계없이

노력에 의해 꿈을 키울수 있다.
